Methodology
Choosing your way of teaching and which teaching style to adopt can be a challenging task. The outcome depends on various factors such as the teacher’s personality, the subject matter, the students’ learning styles, the classroom environment, and the goals of the lesson. Here are some factors to consider when choosing your teaching style:
1. Student needs:
Different students receive information discriminately through different channels resulting in different Learning Styles. The teacher should adapt accordingly. For example, if students are visual learners, a teacher may use visual aids such as diagrams, videos, and images. Additionally, at Elitenglish, the teacher must keep in mind the age group of the students and construct an appropriate lesson for Young Learners.
2. Learning objectives:
Identifying the learning objectives helps greatly with lesson planning and assessment. Bloom’s Taxonomy is a very helpful framework for categorising goals and objectives that target different levels of cognitive complexity. This in turn can be used in identifying the methodology that is most fitting and in turn the teaching style. For example, if the goal is to promote critical thinking, a teacher may use a problem-based learning approach.
3. Classroom environment:
For example, the classroom is noisy or crowded, a teacher may choose a teaching style that promotes group work or individual learning.
4. Teacher’s personality:
Some teachers may prefer a more structured approach, while others may prefer a more relaxed and flexible style.
5. Subject matter:
For example, a science teacher may use experiments and hands-on activities to help students learn, while a literature teacher may use discussions and critical analysis.
